Podcast editing: what it costs and how to brief an editor

Your raw recording is not an episode

An hour of raw audio is rarely listenable: there are pauses, flubs, ums and long stretches where nothing happens. Editing is where a podcast becomes a show. But "editing" can mean anything from a quick cleanup to a fully produced episode, so prices vary accordingly.

The three levels of podcast editing

Level 1 — dialogue cleanup. Removing long pauses, repeated words and mistakes, plus light leveling so volume is consistent. You get a clean recording of what you actually said.

Level 2 — the standard episode. Everything in level 1 plus tighter pacing, background noise reduction, intro and outro, and a quick music bed. This is what most weekly shows buy.

Level 3 — full post-production. All of the above plus chapter markers, sponsor reads inserted, sound effects, multitrack music mixing and a second pass for quality. Think of it as the radio version of your show.

What it should cost

• $50–$150 per episode — dialogue cleanup. Right for interview dumps and internal content you publish raw-ish.
• $150–$400 per episode — the standard edit. The sweet spot for a professional weekly show.
• $400+ per episode — full production. Reserved for heavily scored, scripted or high-stakes shows.

Turnaround usually runs two to five days for a standard episode, so plan a buffer between recording and your publish date.

The brief that keeps costs down

• Send a "keep list." Tell the editor what must stay — your best story, a key announcement, a funny moment. Editors are conservative when unsure, and conservatism costs time.
• Set a target length. "Around 40 minutes" beats "make it tight" every time. Editors can hit a number far faster than a feeling.
• Explain your segment structure. If you always open with a news roundup, say so. Editors who understand the show's bones make better cuts.
• Record cleanly. A quiet room and a decent mic save more editing time than any brief. If you are recording over video calls, ask guests to wear headphones.

The best episode is the one that gets released every week. A predictable, scoped editing package beats a "perfect" one-off that is too expensive to repeat.
