Your script is only half the video
A well-made explainer can be sunk by a voice that feels wrong. The right voice-over artist makes your brand sound the way you want it to be felt — confident, warm, energetic or authoritative. Choosing one is less about "the best" voice and more about the best match.
Step 1 — Define the voice your brand needs
Write down three adjectives for how your audience should feel hearing your brand (e.g. calm and credible, upbeat and youthful). Then decide on:
- Gender and age range of the voice you imagine.
- Accent — US, UK, neutral international or region-specific.
- Tone — conversational vs. broadcast. Explainer scripts usually want conversational; TV ads often want broadcast energy.
- Language — is a native speaker required for the target market?
Step 2 — Listen to full-length demos, not just reels
Reels are edited to the artist's best 60 seconds. Ask for a read of your own script — most professionals offer a short custom sample, often for a small fee credited against the job. It is the single most reliable way to judge a match.
Step 3 — Brief the script properly
- Mark the words to emphasise and the pace you want.
- Note where to pause: "…" beats commas for dramatic rhythm.
- Provide the pronunciation guide for tricky brand or product names.
- Say whether you want a warm smile (yes — you can hear it) and where.
Step 4 — Know what "delivered" means
A professional delivery includes the finished file edited to your video's exact length, cleaned of breaths and mouth noises, at the right sample rate, in a format your editor can use. Ask for it. Raw single-take audio is not the same service.
Rule of thumb: if the artist's demo makes you feel the emotion they describe, they can probably deliver it for your brand too.
