Why logo prices vary by 20x
Search "logo design cost" and you will see everything from $5 to $5,000. Both are real markets — but they are buying very different things. A logo is the tip of your brand iceberg: it only works if it survives contact with your website, your packaging and your social profiles.
What your budget actually buys
Under $100 — template territory. You get a logo drawn from an existing concept library. Fast and cheap, but you do not own the mark exclusively and your brand will look like others who used the same source.
$100–$400 — the freelance sweet spot. A professional freelancer researches your industry, sketches two to three original concepts, iterates with you and hands over vector files with brand-appropriate colours and fonts. Most serious small businesses land here.
$400+ — full identity systems. You are paying for extended research, multiple concepts, usage guidelines, icon variations and often a mini brand book. Worth it when the logo will anchor a funded launch or national marketing.
The process, step by step
- Brief. You share your industry, audience, values and examples you like (and hate).
- Research & concepts. The designer explores the competitive landscape and proposes original directions.
- Feedback rounds. You pick a direction and refine it. Most packages include two to three revision rounds.
- Delivery. Final vector files in multiple formats plus a colour palette and font pairing.
How to brief a designer properly
- Give three adjectives you want the brand to feel (modern, trustworthy, playful) and three it should never feel.
- Say where the logo will live — a freelance portfolio site only, or also on packaging and video?
- Avoid vague asks like "make it pop". Instead reference concrete marks you admire and explain why.
- Ask about source files up front so you own editable vectors, not just a JPEG.
A great logo survives being shrunk to a favicon and stretched to a billboard. If it only works at one size, it is not finished.
