Budgets beat excuses — and so does focus
The most common marketing mistake on a small budget is spreading it across six channels and measuring none. On a lean budget you win by concentrating spend where there is proven demand and by treating every dollar as a test.
The 50 / 30 / 20 starting split
50% — the channel closest to cash. For most small businesses this is search ads or social ads targeting buyers with intent (not just interest). You can measure cost per lead from day one.
30% — owned content and SEO. This is the compounding channel. It takes months, but the asset (ranked pages) keeps paying. Even $0 of ad spend per month can't replace a page ranking for your core service.
20% — experiments. One new channel at a time: partnerships, referrals, local events, a newsletter. Give each experiment a clear metric and a kill/scale date.
Spend money where intent exists
- Google Ads only for keywords where people already want what you sell (buyer-intent terms). Budget enough for data: ~$20–30/day minimum on a single focused campaign.
- Meta Ads work for awareness and retargeting. Your sharpest lever is retargeting people who already visited your site.
- SEO pays best on pages that match a buying question you answer better than competitors.
The measurement habit
- Install analytics and tag your links so you know which channel produced each enquiry.
- Track cost per enquiry, then cost per sale — channel A can look cheap and still convert worst.
- Review monthly, not daily. Daily tweaking burns budget and judgement.
When to DIY and when to hire
Keep strategy and messaging in your head — nobody knows your customer better. Outsource the execution where specialists earn their fee: paid ads (bid management, creative testing) and technical SEO. A professional managing ads properly usually recovers their fee in wasted spend avoided.
If you can only afford one hire, make it the channel that already shows a positive cost per lead. Double down before you diversify.
